More about the project at: https:\/\/worldschildrensprize.org\/pcg<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>A 100,000children \u2013 a whole generation \u2013 in and around the national parks Gonarezhou in Zimbabwe and Limpopo in Mozambique are being educated through the Peace &amp; Changemaker Generation project, as changemakers who can take a stand against wildlife crime, and for girls\u2019 rights in their communities. The project is a partnership between the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.worldschildrensprize.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">World\u2019s Children\u2019s Prize Foundation<\/a>\u00a0and Peace Parks Foundation, with implementation support from the Gonarezhou and Limpopo management and teams.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This may be the first time that such a large number of children in a vast, but defined, area are reached in order to contribute in the long-term to increased respect for children\u2019s rights in their communities, and to the protection of wildlife and nature. In turn, these P&amp;CG Ambassadors and teachers will be empowered to educate approximately 100 000 children at 350 schools, about child rights, the global goals for sustainable development, as well as the consequences of wildlife crime and climate change for their communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Child rights and wildlife crime<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gonarezhou and Limpopo national parks are rich in animal life and biodiversity that are continuously threatened by organized crime; poaching and trafficking of products such as rhino horn and elephant tusks; loss of natural habitat; drought; and climate change. Both ecosystems and animals are endangered. However, they are continuously threatened, primarily by wildlife crime, and loss of natural habitat.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many children here live in deep poverty and face violations of their rights. Girls are especially vulnerable, but boys are also affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paulo from Mozambique, now 16, was told to quit school at 13 to become a poacher: \u201cIt felt pointless carrying on at school, because there aren\u2019t any jobs here anyway. But I\u2019ve had enough.\u201d Poaching is not only illegal; it is also very dangerous. Poachers and rangers are getting killed in South Africa and Mozambique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Twelve-year-old Ronaldo from Mozambique lost his father when he was shot to death by park rangers in South Africa. \u201cIt\u2019s wrong to kill animals, they are innocent. He says: \u201cMany of the boys my age in our village don\u2019t go to school. They poach instead. By killing animals, they are committing crimes that will make Mozambique poorer. But these boys\u2019 rights are also being violated when their parents encourage them to poach instead of going to school. It is every child\u2019s right to be able to go to school.\u201d<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Girls in the areas are especially vulnerable, and child marriage is common. Blessing, 15, from Zimbabwe was badly affected when her father gave up poaching after the number of park rangers increased. \u201cIt means I can\u2019t go to school anymore, because we cannot afford to pay my school fees. Now I\u2019m afraid that I\u2019ll be married off\u201d, says Blessing, having seen many of her peers, and younger girls, being forced to marry. \u201cEven though I had to leave school when my dad gave up poaching, I myself want to become a park ranger. Our wild animals are worth more alive than dead\u201d, says Blessing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blessing, Paulo, Ronaldo, Luis (photo) and 100,000 other children in Zimbabwe and Mozambique are now taking part in the Peace &amp; Changemaker Generation, through which they will learn to stand up for their rights and make a change for a better future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, through the World\u2019s Children\u2019s Prize Program, two million children in other countries will learn about the children in Zimbabwe and Mozambique, wildlife and protected areas, and how a new generation of children can stand together for a brighter tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project is funded by In 2019 the Swedish Postcode Lottery awarded special project grant of nearly 9 million SEK to the Peace &amp; Changemaker Generation, a collaboration between World\u2019s Children\u2019s Prize Foundation and Peace Parks Foundation.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>100,000 children \u2013 a whole generation\u2013 in and around the national parks Gonarezhou in Zimbabwe and Limpopo in Mozambique are being educated and empowered through the Peace &amp; Changemaker Generation project, as changemakers who can take a stand against wildlife crime, and for girls\u2019 rights in their communities.
