{"id":14588,"date":"2004-08-27T06:13:26","date_gmt":"2004-08-27T06:13:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/parquelimpopo.gov.mz\/?p=14588"},"modified":"2023-05-18T06:13:55","modified_gmt":"2023-05-18T06:13:55","slug":"great-limpopo-expansion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/parquelimpopo.gov.mz\/pt\/2004\/08\/27\/great-limpopo-expansion\/","title":{"rendered":"Great Limpopo Expansion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PLANS to establish a Great Limpopo Transfrontier Area, almost trebling the area of land currently protected by the transfrontier park of the same name, were moving ahead, Environment Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk said yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking at Cape Town`s Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens at the launch of this year`s National Tourism Month, which will be next month, he said preparations had started on a joint marketing plan for the area, to be presented at a \u201chigh-level investor conference\u201d next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe aim this year to initiate the development of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Area, which will combine national parks, private game parks and conservancies, hunting areas, eco-tourism development areas and communal land.\u201d<br>These would be brought together into a \u201cworld-class ecotourism destination\u2026 with some 100 000km\u00b2 under protection\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The existing Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park \u2013 which straddles parks and sanctuaries across the borders between Mozambique, Zimbabwe and SA and includes the Kruger National Park \u2013 covers about 35 000km\u00b2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said a further 20km of fence between the Kruger National Park and Mozambique would be taken down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOver the past year SA has invested R40m in tourism-related infrastructure (in the transfrontier park), dropped large portions of the border fence, and completed the construction ofSA`s side of the Giriyondo border post. \u201d<br>It was also planned to build a bridge across the Limpopo to improve access between the Zimbabwe and South African portions of the transfrontier park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Van Schalkwyk also highlighted plans to turn KwaZulu-Natal`s St Lucia Wetland Park into what he described as \u201cthe first transfrontier marine park and the first transfrontier world heritage site in Africa\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe next phase will see us expanding our partnership with Mozambique and Swaziland, whose ministers I will be meeting before the end of November,\u201d the minister said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The country\u2019s tourism month is a joint venture between government and the tourism industry, and is aimed, among other things, at encouraging South Africans to travel within their own country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s events will culminate in a ceremony on September 27 in Phalaborwa in Limpopo to mark World National Tourism<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PLANS to establish a Great Limpopo Transfrontier Area, almost trebling the area of land currently protected by the transfrontier park of the same name, were moving ahead, Environment Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk said yesterday.
